Saab Automobile started in 1945 as a project of the aircraft maker Saab AB, and its first production model, the Saab 92, was launched in 1949. Saab AB merged with Scania-Vabis in 1968, and the car division became the independent company Saab Automobile AB in 1989.
General Motors took half of the company in 1989 and the rest in 2000, then sold it to Spyker Cars in 2010. After a failed attempt to avoid insolvency the bankrupt estate was bought by National Electric Vehicle Sweden in 2012.
