Peugeot began as a family business in 1810, and Automobiles Peugeot was created in 1896, making it the oldest car company in the world. The lion trademark was applied for in 1858.
Armand Peugeot built the company's first vehicle, a steam-powered tricycle, and the first internal combustion car followed in 1890 with a Panhard-Daimler engine. The family and company come from Sochaux, where a large plant and the Peugeot Museum remain.
