The competition

Peugeot launched a web-based amateur styling competition at the Paris Motor Show in 2002, asking would-be designers to create a retro-futurist design that incorporated distinctive features of a historic Peugeot. Some 2,800 proposals arrived from 90 countries. The winner was Stefan Schulze, a 32-year-old German graphic artist, who was given the La griffe trophy and €5,000 at the 2003 Geneva Motor Show, where Peugeot announced that it would build a full-size version of his design.

The car

The finished car was shown at the 2003 Frankfurt Motor Show. It had a body of aluminium and fibreglass and 21-inch wheels, and its headlights were hidden behind the grille as a nod to the streamlined Peugeot 402 of 1936. As a show car it was not powered and not road-legal.

What it meant

As a styling experiment the 4002 was called dynamic, glamorous and daring, but probably too extreme to predict any real influence on future Peugeot designs. It stands as an example of the design competitions Peugeot used in the 2000s, of which the Moonster was another result.

Design and features

  • Competition design: the only Peugeot built from an amateur web entry.
  • Hidden headlights: a reference to the 402 of 1936.
  • Mixed materials: aluminium and fibreglass body.
  • Large wheels: 21-inch rims on a compact show car.
  • No powertrain: a pure styling model, not a runner.

Peugeot 4002 versions

  • 4002 (2003): the single show car built from the winning design.

The 4002 took its hidden headlights from the Peugeot 402 and shared its competition origin with the Moonster. More in the Peugeot collection.
