History of the Peugeot Moonster

The competition

The Moonster was the winner of the first biennial Peugeot Concours Design, held in 2000, where the brief was to design a theoretical car for 2020. It was designed by Marko Lukovic, a 23-year-old Serbian student of applied arts, who received a cheque for €5,000, about US$5,800, as the prize. Peugeot built the design as a full-size concept and revealed it at the Frankfurt Motor Show on 11 September 2001.

The design

The engine is located at wheel level. The shape draws on cars of 2020 and of the early 1900s as well as on lunar rovers and dolphins, the last of these visible in a rear spoiler shaped like a dolphin’s tail. The body is made from polished aluminium sheets formed into curves, which gives the car a chrome-like appearance. Inside there are four seats and an aircraft-style steering wheel.

Design and features

  • Competition winner: the first Peugeot Concours Design result to be built.
  • Lunar-rover inspiration: a shape drawn from space exploration.
  • Polished aluminium: hand-formed sheets giving a chrome finish.
  • Dolphin tail: a spoiler shaped like the animal’s tail.
  • Aircraft wheel: an unusual steering control with four seats.

Peugeot Moonster versions

  • Moonster (2001): the single concept car built from the winning design.

The Moonster came from the same competition tradition as the Peugeot 4002, which was built from its own winning entry two years later. More in the Peugeot collection.
