History of the Peugeot 20Cup

A racing-inspired shape

The 20Cup was built in 2005 around the “tadpole” layout: two wheels at the front, one at the back, the reverse of the classic three-wheeler. Peugeot built it on a carbon-fibre structure, which carried a two-seat cockpit. The front end came from the Peugeot 207, while the rear was taken from a motorcycle, so the car sat with the driver between a car nose and a bike tail.

The engine

The purpose-built 1.6-litre engine was made in a collaboration between BMW and PSA Peugeot Citroën. The turbocharged four-cylinder sixteen-valve petrol unit produced a maximum of 170 hp. It was the same cooperation that later supplied the turbocharged 1.6 engines for production Peugeots, Citroëns and Minis.

What it was for

The 20Cup was a show car rather than a production project. It took the shape of the 207, which was about to replace the 206, and reduced it to a two-seat machine with a motorcycle rear, a format Peugeot had already explored with the 2001 Moonster design competition. The car appeared at the 2005 Frankfurt Motor Show and was later shown in Brazil.

Design and features

  • Reverse trike: two wheels in front, one behind, the “tadpole” arrangement.
  • Carbon-fibre structure: a lightweight chassis carrying the cockpit.
  • Mixed body: 207 front end and motorcycle rear.
  • Turbo 1.6: 170 hp from a four-cylinder sixteen-valve unit.
  • BMW cooperation: the engine came from the PSA and BMW joint programme.

Peugeot 20Cup versions

  • 20Cup (2005): the single concept car, shown at Frankfurt and later in Brazil.

The 20Cup used the front of the Peugeot 207 and followed the design-contest ideas of the Moonster. More in the Peugeot collection.
