History of the Peugeot Type 10

One of the numbered types

The Type 10 belongs to the first generation of Peugeot cars, which were given “type” numbers as the company developed them. It was built from 1894 to 1896, at a time when Peugeot was producing only a few dozen cars a year and each design was still largely hand-made.

The car

The Type 10 was a five-seater with a closed body whose shape resembled that of an estate car. It was powered by a V-twin engine of 1,645 cc, a large unit for the period, mounted in a chassis that followed the practice of the time with carriage-like proportions.

Rarity

Only three units were made, which makes the Type 10 among the rarest of the early Peugeot types. The small numbers reflect the experimental nature of the car: in the 1890s Peugeot was still developing its range type by type, and not every design went beyond a handful of examples.

Design and features

  • Early type numbering: part of the first series of numbered Peugeot designs.
  • V-twin engine: 1,645 cc in a car of the mid-1890s.
  • Closed body: a five-seat car shaped like an estate.
  • Very rare: only three units built.

Peugeot Type 10 versions

  • Type 10 (1894): the only version.

The Type 10 belongs with the earliest Peugeot types, such as the Type 3 and the Type 5. More in the Peugeot collection.
