The Austin Motor Company was founded in 1905 by Herbert Austin, who had left Wolseley, and built its works at Longbridge near Birmingham. In 1952 it merged with Morris Motors to form the British Motor Corporation while keeping its own identity.
The Austin marque was used by BMC's successors, British Leyland and Rover Group, until 1987. The trademark now belongs to the Chinese firm SAIC Motor, which obtained it through Nanjing Automotive, the buyer of the MG Rover Group in July 2005.
