Tatra was founded in 1850 as Ignatz Schustala & Cie. and became a joint-stock company under the name Nesselsdorfer Wagenbau-Fabriksgesellschaft in 1890. It built the Präsident in 1897, the first factory-produced car with a petrol engine in Central and Eastern Europe.
The Tatra badge was adopted in 1919, after the nearby Tatra Mountains. The marque became known for backbone tube chassis and air-cooled engines with the Tatra 11 of 1923, and today it builds heavy off-road trucks.
