John Deere, a blacksmith from Vermont, moved to Grand Detour, Illinois, and opened a shop there in 1837. His polished self-scouring steel plow slid through the heavy Midwestern soil where iron and wooden plows clogged.
The business was incorporated as Deere & Company in 1868, after John Deere had moved to Moline for the railroad and the Mississippi. Production of gasoline tractors came to define the company in the twentieth century.
