The Mitsubishi Group traces its origins to the zaibatsu founded by Iwasaki Yatarō in 1870, a unified company that existed until 1946. It was disbanded during the post-war occupation of Japan, but the former companies kept the brand and trademark.
The companies cooperate mainly through monthly executive meetings and remain formally independent, not under common control. The three main entities are MUFG, the largest bank in Japan, Mitsubishi Corporation and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.
