History of the Mitsubishi V3000
A local Galant with a V6
The V3000 name first applied to a 3.0-litre V6 version of the Mitsubishi Galant manufactured locally in New Zealand between 1988 and 1991. It was intended to sit above the closely related but wider Magna, a 2.6-litre four-cylinder car imported from Australia in TN and TP form.
The Australian Verada
In 1991 the V3000 name moved to the Australian-sourced Mitsubishi Verada, the luxury version of the Magna, in KR and KS form, still with a 3.0-litre V6. After 1996 Mitsubishi Motors in New Zealand adopted the international Diamante name for the V6 saloon that succeeded it.
A local name
The material available for this page is a short entry about the New Zealand nameplate, so the article does not describe engines in detail, equipment or sales. The V3000 is a good example of how Mitsubishi adapted its international range to a small market: the same cars were sold elsewhere as the Galant, Magna, Verada and Diamante.
Design and features
- New Zealand only: the name was not used in other markets.
- Two cars: a local V6 Galant, then the Australian Verada.
- 3.0-litre V6: the engine that gave the car its name.
- Above the Magna: it sat over the imported 2.6-litre model.
Mitsubishi V3000 versions
- First generation (1988–1991): New Zealand-built V6 Galant.
- Second generation (1991–1996): Verada KR and KS from Australia.
The V3000 was a version of the Galant and later of the Australian Magna and Verada, and its successor used the Diamante name. More cars are in the Mitsubishi collection.
