Lexus originated from a corporate project code-named F1, begun in 1983 to develop a new premium sedan, which culminated in the launch of the Lexus LS in 1989. The division later added sedan, coupé, convertible and SUV models.

The brand did not exist in Japan until 2005, when it also opened dealerships at home. A performance division, F, arrived in 2007 with the IS F sedan, followed by the LFA supercar in 2009.
