Paco Bultó was a director of Montesa. When Montesa wanted to withdraw from racing as an economy measure, Bultó, the driving force behind its racing programme, left and set up a new company with several former Montesa racing staff, working at first in primitive conditions at an old farm of his own.
On 24 March 1959 Bultaco launched its first motorcycle, the road-going 125 cc Tralla 101, named after a Spanish word for whip. Two months later it entered its first Spanish Grand Prix and took seven of the first ten places. Production ran from 1958 to 1983, and a new Bultaco was announced in May 2014.
