Ural's origins lie in the Second World War, when Soviet engineers reverse-engineered the BMW R71 to create the M-72 military motorcycle, produced from August 1941. On 21 October 1941 the plant was moved east to Irbit, where it became the Irbit Motorcycle Factory.
IMZ began exporting motorcycles in 1953, and Ural machines reached Western Europe, Asia and the United States. In 1994 an independent distributor called Ural-America began selling them in the US, which led to today's IMZ-Ural company.
