The Ural-5323 is the heaviest of the Miass trucks: an 8×8 off-road machine designed for army service and produced since 1989. It carries up to 12 tonnes, tows trailers of up to 16 tonnes and serves as the platform for the Pantsir-S1 gun-missile air defence system.

History of the Ural-5323
From NAMI-058 to the Susha family
In the mid-1960s NAMI and the Ural plant began work on a family of unified high-mobility trucks for the Ministry of Defence. Prototypes NAMI-058 (8×8 with the YaMZ-238N diesel of 320 hp) and the NAMI-058S tractor were built in 1965–1966 but never entered production. The Ural plant worked in parallel on its own designs, and in 1969 built the Ural-379A cab-over and Ural-379B bonneted 6×6 prototypes with an experimental Ural-2E640 V8 of 200 hp.
The Susha programme
From April 1977 the military programme coded Susha called for a cab-over 8×8 with a KamAZ cab. In September 1979 six vehicles went to acceptance trials, including two Ural-5322 8×8 trucks of different wheelbases and the amphibious Ural-53221. Trials ended successfully in October 1980 and the family was recommended for service, though the YaMZ engines proved unreliable.
Production
With the KamAZ-7403.10 turbo-diesel of 260 hp the truck received the name Ural-5323; the first example was built in 1985 with a KamAZ cab, a five-speed gearbox and a two-speed transfer case. Series production began in 1989, in small batches, because the KamAZ cab did not fit the chassis well and KamAZ engines were in short supply. Later trucks used Iveco cabs.
Design and features
- 8×8 with 12 tonnes: the heaviest load in the Ural range.
- Pantsir-S1 platform: the air defence system is built on the 5323 chassis.
- Cab-over layout: chosen in 1969 for better weight distribution and a possible amphibious version.
- Two cab generations: KamAZ cabs at first, Iveco cabs after 2000.
- Military and civil versions: headlamps in the cab for the army, in the bumper for civilian buyers.
Ural-5323 versions
- Ural-5323: the standard 8×8 cargo truck.
- Ural-5323-20: version for 10-tonne loads and 16-tonne trailers.
- Ural-53232: with the Kutstanay-built Ural-745 diesel.
- Civilian version: headlamps in the bumper instead of the cab.
The 5323 is the heavy member of the family that includes the Ural-4320 and the older Ural-375. More trucks are in the Ural collection.
