History of the Ural Tourist
A touring outfit
The Tourist was the version of the Ural outfit intended for long journeys. Its specification included a leading-link front fork, a windscreen, a crash bar on the left and a luggage rack above the spare wheel, and the wheels were given discs with aluminium hubs and equal spokes. Not every modification was fitted to every machine of the model.
In the range
The Tourist stayed in the catalogue for decades. The 2013 range listed both a Tourist and a Tourist 2WD, the second with drive to the sidecar wheel. Modern Tourists use the 750 cc air-cooled boxer twin with a four-speed gearbox including reverse and a shaft final drive.
Design and features
- Leading-link fork: a different front end from the standard telescopic fork of the period.
- Touring equipment: windscreen, crash bar and a luggage rack over the spare wheel.
- Aluminium hubs: discs with equal spokes on the Tourist specification.
- Two-wheel drive option: the Tourist 2WD drives the sidecar wheel.
Ural Tourist versions
- Ural Tourist (IMZ-8.103-40): the standard touring outfit.
- Tourist 2WD: with drive to the sidecar wheel, listed in the 2013 range.
The Tourist belongs to the Ural sidecar range and is close to the Patrol; the Retro is the styling-led alternative. More machines are in the Ural collection.
