The Pegaso 6424 was the 240 hp turbocharged version of the 6420, created when Caracas asked for more power. Madrid’s EMT took 775 of them, and with this model the history of Pegaso integral buses came to an end.

History of the Pegaso 6424

The 6424 began as a power upgrade rather than a new bus. When the 6420 was nearly ready, an order came from Venezuela for the urban service in Caracas, asking for more power. Pegaso added a turbocharger to the 11,945 cm³ 96A4AZ engine, creating the 96T4Ez of 240 hp, and the resulting model was named 6424.

Madrid’s EMT made the 6424 the basis for renewing its old Pegaso fleet, which removed the last 6050s and much of the 6038 fleet from the streets. The operator re-engined its 6420s with the 6424 engine and had Unicar body the 6424 for the duration of the order, in the U90 and U90.1 versions. In all, EMT Madrid received 775 units; Barcelona’s TMB took six.

With the 6424 the history of Pegaso integral buses closed, and production of urban buses under the Pegaso name ceased. From 1993 buses were built under Iveco, with the Spanish adaptation of the Turbocity sold as the Iveco-Pegaso 5522.

One prototype survived with the Unicar U92 body, the only Pegaso chassis to carry that bodywork, of which few examples were built. It is kept by Acet in a village in the province of Valencia after serving as an urban bus in Benidorm.

Design and features

  • 240 hp turbo engine: the 96T4Ez, a turbocharged 11,945 cm³ unit derived from the 6420’s 96A4AZ.
  • Unicar bodies: U90 and U90.1 bodywork, built for the Madrid order.
  • Madrid standard: 775 buses made the 6424 the mainstay of EMT Madrid’s renewed fleet.
  • End of a line: the last integral bus sold with a Pegaso badge.

Pegaso 6424 versions

  • 6424 with Unicar U90: the standard Madrid bus.
  • 6424 with Unicar U90.1: the second-generation body.
  • 6424 with Unicar U92: a single surviving prototype, kept by Acet near Valencia.

The model it was derived from is Pegaso 6420; the buses it replaced are in Pegaso 6038 and Pegaso 6050; more under Pegaso.
