The Pegaso 6420 was an integral urban bus developed by ENASA in 1985 to replace the 6038. ENASA found the answer in MAN: the 6420 was an adaptation of the MAN SL200, built to the German VÖV standard, with a Pegaso engine and a body modernised by Obradors. Barcelona’s TMB took 184 and Valencia 56.

History of the Pegaso 6420

In 1985 Pegaso wanted a bus as robust and effective as the 6038 had been, and found the solution at MAN. The 6420 was an adaptation of the MAN SL200, a vehicle designed by MAN within the VÖV standard that prevailed in Germany.

The first version carried a naturally aspirated Pegaso 96A4AZ engine of 11,945 cm³ and 200 hp, with a Pegaso rear axle. Because the body was considered too old-fashioned, Obradors was asked to modernise the lines of the original 6420, and the resulting body was marketed by ENASA itself.

When the new bus was nearly finished, an order arrived from Venezuela for the urban service in Caracas, asking for more power. Pegaso added a turbocharger to the 96A4AZ, keeping the swept volume at 11,945 cm³ and raising output to 240 hp; that model became the Pegaso 6424, on which Madrid’s EMT renewed its old Pegaso fleet.

The 6420 with ENASA bodywork did not convince the EMT of Madrid, which re-engined it with the 6424’s engine and had Unicar body the 6424 for the duration of the order. Other large cities were happier: TMB of Barcelona received 184 Pegaso 6420s and 6 of the 6424, while the EMT of Valencia took 56 of the 6420.

Design and features

  • MAN SL200 basis: a German VÖV-standard design adapted by ENASA.
  • Pegaso engine: the 11,945 cm³ 96A4AZ of 200 hp, with a Pegaso rear axle.
  • Obradors body: the original MAN lines modernised by the Spanish coachbuilder.
  • Turbo derivative: the same engine with a turbocharger gave the 6424 its 240 hp.

Pegaso 6420 versions

  • 6420: the 200 hp bus with Obradors bodywork.
  • 6424: 240 hp turbo version developed for the Caracas order.
  • Re-engined Madrid buses: 6420s fitted with the 6424 engine by EMT Madrid.

Its predecessor is Pegaso 6038, its turbo sister Pegaso 6424, and the last of the line is described in the 6424 article; more under Pegaso.
