The Nissan Tiida is a compact car built from 2004 to 2023 in three generations. Depending on the market it was also sold as a subcompact, particularly in the Americas where the first generation was the Nissan Versa. The name is Okinawan for sun, continuing the tradition begun in 1966 with the Sunny.

History of the Nissan Tiida

C11 (2004)

Nissan showed the C-Note concept in 2003 to preview the C11’s styling, a hatchback on the same platform as the Renault Mégane, at the Tokyo Motor Show. The Tiida hatchback and Tiida Latio sedan debuted in Japan in 2004 and reached some European countries in 2007. Built on a stretched-wheelbase version of the Nissan B platform, it came as a five-door hatchback and a four-door sedan, sold in North America as the Versa and in South-East Asia as the Latio. The C11 sat between the subcompact and compact classes, filling the gap between the smaller Micra and March and the larger Sylphy and Sentra.

Names in different markets

Nissan first wanted every market to use the Tiida name, despite objections from markets such as Australia, which insisted on the better-known Pulsar nameplate. The United States chose a new name, Versa, which set a precedent for Australia to reuse the Pulsar name on the succeeding C12. In Japan the Tiida replaced the Sunny B15 as the smallest sedan; in North America it became a new entry model below the Sentra; elsewhere it took the role previously held by the Almera, Pulsar, Sentra and Sunny of the N16 generation, sold in Japan as the Bluebird Sylphy G10.

C12 and C13

The second generation, marketed from 2011, is a five-door hatchback only, with the four-door role passed to the subcompact Almera, Latio, Sunny and Versa N17 and the compact Sylphy, Sentra and Pulsar B17. From 2013 the C12 was sold in Thailand, Australia and New Zealand as the Nissan Pulsar, and it was wider than the C11 to sit properly in the compact class and no longer sold in Japan or Taiwan. The third-generation Tiida, sold in Russia and China, was introduced in 2015 as a rebadged Pulsar C13 hatchback.

Design and features

  • Okinawan name: Tiida means sun, like the Sunny before it.
  • Many badges: Versa in America, Latio in Asia, Pulsar in Oceania.
  • Stretched B platform: the C11 grew out of the Micra’s base.
  • Hatchback only: the C12 dropped the saloon body.

Nissan Tiida versions

  • Tiida C11 (2004–2018): hatchback and Latio sedan.
  • Nissan Versa: the North American name for the C11.
  • Tiida C12 (2011–): the wider hatchback sold as the Pulsar.
  • Tiida C13 (2015–2023): the rebadged Pulsar for Russia and China.

The Tiida replaced the Sunny B15 in Japan and its saloon was the Latio, while its place in Australia was taken by the Pulsar. More cars are in the Nissan collection.
