Brothers Horace and John Dodge ran a machine shop that supplied parts and assemblies to Detroit automakers such as Ford. They began building complete cars under the Dodge Brothers name in 1914; both died in 1920, and the company was sold to Chrysler in 1928.
For much of its existence Dodge was Chrysler's mid-priced brand above Plymouth, with trucks and full-sized passenger cars as its mainstay. The compact Dart arrived in 1963, and the 1981 K platform, including the Caravan, is credited with reviving Chrysler.
