The Case C was one of the small farm tractors Case sold in the 1930s. A 1935 example is the subject of the film below, driven by a land girl, while the American maker was already thirty years into tractor production.

History of the Case C

Case after the cars

Case had built cars from 1911 and even ran three of them in the first Indianapolis 500, but it gave up car production in 1927 and turned back to farm and construction machinery. By the mid-1930s the company was selling a wide range of tractors to farmers who were replacing horses with petrol power.

The small tractor

The C belonged to the smaller end of that range. The sources used here do not give its engine, weight or production numbers, so this page does not state them; what they do record is the company’s course through the decade, including the purchase of the Rock Island Plow Company in 1937.

The film

The film shows a 1935 Case C driven by a land girl. Machines of this size were kept working for decades, and many survived because they were simple enough for a farmer to repair.

Design and features

  • Small farm tractor: the C was the sort of machine bought to replace horses on a mixed farm.
  • 1930s Case: built by a company that had just left car making behind.
  • Surviving example: a 1935 machine still runs and is filmed here.
  • No specification in the sources: the page does not invent one.

Case C versions

  • Case C (as filmed in 1935): the tractor on this page.
  • Case cars (1911–1927): the other product Case gave up in 1927.
  • Later Case tractors: the models that followed, such as the Case VAC.

The tractors that came after are on the Case VAC and Case D series pages, and the earliest machines on the Case 10-18 page. More are in the Case section.
