History of the Case Poclain

The Batailles

Georges Bataille founded Ateliers de Poclain in 1927 at Le Plessis-Belleville, near Paris, as a workshop for farm machinery repairs. The company moved into excavators after the war: in 1948 it built a loader unit on a Dodge 4×4 chassis, and in 1951 the TU, a hydraulic excavator carried on a two-wheeled trailer and driven from the towing tractor. Over a thousand were sold before the TO replaced it in 1956.

The TY45

In 1961 Poclain introduced the TY and TYA for the German market and, the same year, the TY45: a full 360-degree excavator on a three-wheeled tricycle undercarriage. It was the company’s commercial triumph, with 30,000 built over the next 21 years. Poclain machines were also built under licence in Argentina, Czechoslovakia, India, Japan and Korea, with subsidiaries in Brazil and Mexico.

Case takes over

A 1975 agreement with Volvo opened Scandinavia and Austria, and in 1977 Case, then expanding its construction equipment division, bought 40% of Poclain. Case took charge of distribution in the United States and Canada, and by 1987 it held 98.7% of the company. The Bataille family kept the hydraulics business, which became Poclain Hydraulics, still a maker of radial piston motors.
