History of the Case D series
The switch to gas
Case built about 36,000 steam engines before it changed over to gas tractors in 1927, the same year it ended car production. The D series belongs to the generation that followed: tractors designed from the start around a petrol engine rather than a steam boiler.
A company changing shape
In 1928 Case bought the farm machinery side of Emerson-Brantingham and took the name J. I. Case Company, and in 1937 it added the Rock Island Plow Company. The D, DC and DC-4 came out of those years, when Case was assembling a full farm line.
What the sources give
The sources used for this page describe the company and these purchases, not the individual tractors, so no power, weight or production figures appear here. The three model names come from the old posts that redirect to this page.
Design and features
- Three versions: D, DC and DC-4, one line with several forms.
- Post-steam generation: petrol tractors from the years Case gave up steam.
- Growing farm line: built as Case absorbed Emerson-Brantingham and Rock Island Plow.
- No invented data: the sources give no figures for the models.
Case D series versions
- Case D: the standard tractor of the line.
- Case DC: a version of the same series.
- Case DC-4: another version of the DC, the four in the name marking the version.
- Case L and LA: the line that followed, on the Case L and LA page.
The line that followed is on the Case L and LA page, the earlier petrol tractors on the Case 10-18 page. Everything is in the Case section.
