Automobiles Ettore Bugatti was founded in 1909 in Molsheim, then a German city in Alsace. Its cars were praised for their beauty and won many races; the best known are the Type 35 Grand Prix cars, the Type 41 Royale, the Type 57 Atlantic and the Type 55 sports car.
The death of Jean Bugatti in 1939 left no successor, and Ettore died in 1947. With about 8,000 cars made, the company struggled, released one last model in the 1950s and was bought for its aircraft parts business in 1963. An Italian entrepreneur bought the name in 1987 and revived it; since 2021 it belongs to Bugatti Rimac.
