The roots of Zastava lie in the military technical institute founded in Kragujevac in 1851, whose cannon foundry division appeared in 1853. An automobile section was opened within the company in 1904.
On 12 August 1954 Zastava signed a cooperation agreement with Fiat and three months later began assembling the Fiat 1400, 1100 B and Campagnola. The Zastava 750, a licensed Fiat 600, was built from 1955 to 1985, and the company ceased vehicle production in 2008.
