The Toyota Urban Cruiser is a nameplate Toyota has used since 2008 for several subcompact SUVs. It began on the European version of the second-generation Toyota Ist, then returned in 2020 on rebadged Suzuki models, and since 2024 has also been used on an electric SUV.

History of the Toyota Urban Cruiser

The concept (2006)

Toyota showed an Urban Cruiser concept in 2006, a small SUV study that pointed to a compact high-riding model for Europe. The name was new to Toyota, which until then had used it for nothing in production.

The XP110 Urban Cruiser (2008–2014)

The first production Urban Cruiser was the European version of the second-generation Toyota Ist, sold from 2008 to 2014. It was a tall five-door hatchback with a revised front end compared with the Japanese car. It came with a 1,329 cc petrol engine of 99 PS and 132 N·m, or a 1,364 cc turbo-diesel of 90 PS and 205 N·m; front-wheel drive was standard, the diesel could be ordered with all-wheel drive, and both used a six-speed manual with no automatic option. Despite seven airbags, anti-lock brakes and traction control, it scored three stars in Euro NCAP, a relatively poor result. The Ist itself was also sold in the United States as the Scion xD.

The Suzuki-based years (2020 onwards)

After a gap the name returned in 2020 on a rebadged Suzuki Vitara Brezza, sold in India and Africa between 2020 and 2022. In 2022 Toyota applied it to a rebadged Suzuki Grand Vitara, called the Urban Cruiser Hyryder in India and the Urban Cruiser in South Africa and the Middle East from 2023. The Urban Cruiser Taisor, a rebadged Suzuki Fronx, followed in 2024, and the same year brought an electric Urban Cruiser, a rebadged Suzuki e Vitara, also known as the Urban Cruiser Ebella in India. The nameplate therefore no longer denotes one car but a family of small SUVs built with Suzuki for emerging markets and Europe.
