History of the Peugeot 3008

The first 3008

The 3008 was launched in 2008 and shared its platform with the 5008, which was a larger three-row MPV. Its styling was criticised at the time, but the motoring press praised the car: in January 2010 the British magazine What Car? made it its Car of the Year, and it was also the 2010 Semperit Irish Car of the Year, an award it repeated in 2018 as the Continental Irish Car of the Year. The Exclusive and Allure versions had a head-up display that projected a reading onto a small screen in the driver’s line of sight and included a distance alert, cruise control and speed limiter information.

3008 HYbrid4

The 3008 HYbrid4 was launched in February 2012 as the world’s first mass-produced diesel-electric hybrid. It used a six-speed automatic gearbox and the only 2.0-litre DW10 diesel in the PSA range, rated at 163 PS at 3,750 rpm and 340 Nm at 2,000 rpm. The system had four modes: Auto, where the electronics controlled everything; ZEV for all-electric running; four-wheel drive; and Sport, which held higher engine speeds. A 200 V nickel-metal hydride battery pack sat in the rear.

Outside Europe

From 2010 to late 2012 the 3008 was imported into China from Europe. From late 2012 Dongfeng Peugeot-Citroën began building it there; the Chinese car was longer at 4.43 m and had a different design, and it was facelifted again in April 2016 with a more aggressive look.

The second generation

The second-generation 3008 was announced in May 2016 and shown at the Paris Motor Show that September, on the EMP2 platform first used by the second-generation 308. It brought the new iCockpit with an eight-inch touchscreen, a 12.3-inch configurable head-up display and the small steering wheel that later became standard across the range. Sales began in January 2017, and 100,000 orders were taken in Europe between October 2016 and March 2017, half of them from buyers who had not owned a Peugeot before. It won European Car of the Year 2017, CarBuyer Car of the Year 2017 and DieselCar Car of the Year 2017. A facelift was shown on 1 September 2020, and a mild hybrid version followed in February 2023.
