History of the Peugeot Q3A
A civil successor to a military truck
The Q3A followed the DMA, a vehicle designed for the needs of the French army but finally produced for the German army between 1941 and 1944. After the war Peugeot needed a light truck for civilian operators, and the revised DMAH was turned into the Q3A.
What changed
The differences from the previous version were numerous: a chassis with an improved structure, rear shock absorbers, a longer wheelbase and a reduction in gross vehicle weight to three tonnes. The Q3A could carry 1,400 kg with a kerb weight of 1,600 kg.
The engine
The truck was powered by the very modern “TM” engine, developing 40 hp, with the speed limited to 65 km/h on the level and average consumption of 14 l/100 km. That same engine, without the limiter, would equip the Peugeot 203 a few months later.
Place in the range
The Q3A was sold for only two years. In 1950 the light commercial slot passed to the D3 van, which came into the Peugeot range with the purchase of the Chenard-Walcker business and its van design.
Design and features
- Strengthened chassis: an improved structure over the DMA.
- Rear dampers: a comfort and stability change over the earlier truck.
- TM engine: 40 hp, the unit later used in the 203.
- Simplified weight: gross weight cut to three tonnes.
- Short life: only two years on sale, 1948 to 1950.
Peugeot Q3A versions
- Q3A (1948): the only version, a light truck derived from the DMAH.
The Q3A replaced the Peugeot DMA and its place in the range was taken by the D3 and D4, while its engine went into the 203. More in the Peugeot collection.
