The Mini was designed for the British Motor Corporation by Sir Alec Issigonis and built from 1959 into 2000, with an estimated 5.38 million of all variations produced. Initially sold as the Austin Seven and Morris Mini-Minor, it became a marque in its own right in 1969.
BMW took ownership of the Mini name with the sale of Rover Group in 2000 and has produced a modern MINI family since 2001. The original car is known retrospectively as the Classic Mini.
