History of the Mazda R100
The R100 was, apart from its engine, a technically unchanged coupé version of the Mazda 1000/1300, which was called the Familia in Japan. Its 0820 Wankel engine came from the second-series Mazda 110S Cosmo but was fitted with a single carburettor and detuned to 74 kW (100 PS). The rest of the car was very conventional, with a live rear axle and drum brakes at the rear.
Mazda sold the R100 in Japan, the United States and some European markets, notably France, but not in Germany. In Japan it was launched in June 1968, Mazda’s second rotary-engined car after the Cosmo, and it stayed in production until 1973. In Japan the rotary Familia was later replaced by the RX-3/Savanna, while export markets moved on to the RX-2 and RX-3, which used the later Capella and Grand Familia bodies.
