The Lamborghini Estoque is a four-door saloon concept shown at the Paris motor show in 2008. With a front-mounted engine, four doors and a longer body than any Lamborghini before it, it broke every rule the company had followed since the 1960s — and it stayed a one-off, although its idea eventually returned in the Urus.

History of the Lamborghini Estoque
A saloon from Sant’Agata
The Estoque was unveiled on the eve of the Paris show in October 2008. Every Lamborghini on sale at the time was a mid-engined two-seater sports car, so a four-door saloon with the engine in front was a deliberate departure. It was described at the time as a concept for a four-door costing around $230,000, and it was the first front-engined Lamborghini since the LM002 off-roader of the 1980s. The power unit came from the Gallardo: a 5.2-litre V10 rated at 560 PS, driving all four wheels through the company’s permanent all-wheel-drive system. At 5,150 mm long, 1,990 mm wide and 1,350 mm tall, the Estoque was larger than any Lamborghini before it.

Production hopes and the end
For a while the car looked likely to be built. Reports in early 2009 suggested the project had been cancelled; Lamborghini replied that the Estoque had never reached the production planning stage and that the decision had been delayed for sales and marketing reasons. There was even talk of it being built in China, with production announced for 2012. In early 2010 the company’s president, Stephan Winkelmann, confirmed that there would be no series production. He added that the reaction to the Estoque had shown Lamborghini there was demand outside the sports car market, and the Urus of 2018 proved him right — but he insisted the Estoque itself was only ever a concept.
Why the name
Like most Lamborghinis, the Estoque takes its name from bullfighting: an estoque is the sword the matador uses to finish the bull. It was the last of the company’s concepts to follow the traditional naming before the Urus, a breed of wild cattle, continued the practice.
Design and features
- Four doors: a saloon body, the first on a Lamborghini concept and a deliberate break with the two-seat rule.
- Front-mounted V10: the Gallardo’s 5.2-litre engine moved ahead of the cabin, the first such layout since the LM002.
- All-wheel drive: permanent four-wheel drive, as on the production Lamborghinis of the period.
- Full-size proportions: 5.15 metres long and two metres wide, with room for four adults.
Lamborghini Estoque versions
- Estoque concept (2008): the only car built, a grey four-door shown in Paris and at later events.
The Estoque used the engine of the Gallardo and followed the front-engined layout of the LM002. More cars are in the Lamborghini collection.
