The Jelcz 422 was the second generation of the Polish maker’s 400 series of heavy trucks and the successor of the Jelcz 410. It was sold with a wide choice of engines and in several model numbers, and its 4×4 derivative became the base for specialised bodies such as fire appliances.

History of the Jelcz 422

The 422 brought a new set of components. Alongside modernised WSK Mielec units, the engine range included the Detroit Diesel Series 60 with a twelve-speed Eaton gearbox, chosen to attract foreign customers. Good opinions about the Series 60 led Jelcz to add the cheaper Steyr WD 615, and ZF gearboxes with sixteen ratios became an option alongside the FPS units. After the Zasada Group took over Jelcz in 1995, trucks with the Mercedes-Benz OM 441 LA engine joined the range, while the older engines were modernised step by step, culminating in the WSK Mielec MD111E that met the Euro 2 emission standard.

When the Euro 3 standard arrived, the engine range was revised and Iveco Aifo units were introduced at the turn of 1999 and 2000, after which the other engines were practically withdrawn from the offer. The model number depended on the engine: the range was divided into the 422, 423, 424 and 425, and a separate 442 differed by its 4×4 drive and was used mainly for specialised bodies, for example fire appliances.

The 422 thus ended the interim character of the 410 and gave Jelcz a modern heavy truck with a choice of power units from four countries, from a 239 hp Iveco to a 430 hp Iveco, and from a 242 hp Mielec diesel to the 400 and 425 hp Detroit Diesel.

Design and features

  • Wide engine range: Mielec, Detroit Diesel, Steyr, Mercedes-Benz and Iveco Aifo units from 239 to 430 hp.
  • Gearbox choice: FPS units as standard, twelve-speed Eaton with the Series 60 and sixteen-speed ZF as an option.
  • Euro standards: from Euro 1 and Euro 2 engines to Iveco Aifo units meeting Euro 3.
  • 4×4 derivative: the 442 chassis for fire and other specialised bodies.

Jelcz 422 versions

  • Jelcz 422, 423, 424, 425: the model numbers assigned according to the engine fitted.
  • Jelcz 442: the 4×4 version for specialised bodies, mainly fire appliances.
  • Zasada-era trucks: from 1995 with the Mercedes-Benz OM 441 LA engine.

The 422 followed the first-generation Jelcz 410 and used the same heavy-truck technology as the Jelcz 640. More trucks are in the Jelcz collection.
