Case Uni-Loader: the skid steer that began in 1969

The Case Uni-Loader is the company’s skid-steer loader, a compact machine with lift arms that Case has built since 1969. The video below shows a Case 1840 Uni-Loader clearing snow.

History of the Case Uni-Loader

1969: skid steers

Case has built skid-steer loaders since 1969, starting at Burlington, Iowa, and later moving production to Wichita, Kansas. A skid steer steers by driving its left and right wheels at different speeds rather than by turning a front axle, which is what makes a machine this small so manoeuvrable.

Tools and numbers

The point of a skid steer is the lift arms at the front, which take a quick-change attachment: a bucket, forks, a snow blade, a sweeper. That is why Case describes them as fitted with labour-saving tools, and why so many are sold: the 250,000th was built in 2010 and the 300,000th in 2017.

The 1840 in the film

The machine in the film is a Case 1840 Uni-Loader clearing snow, a winter job these loaders do well. The sources used for this page describe the skid-steer line rather than the 1840 individually, so its engine and output are not given here.

Design and features

  • Skid steering: turns by varying the speed of its two sides, not by a steering axle.
  • Lift arms: take buckets, forks, blades and other tools.
  • Long production: built since 1969, with 300,000 made by 2017.
  • Wichita built: production moved from Burlington, Iowa, to Wichita, Kansas.

Case Uni-Loader versions

  • Case 1840 Uni-Loader: the machine shown in the film.
  • Other Uni-Loader sizes: the rest of the skid-steer range.
  • Case compact track loaders: the tracked version of the same idea.

The wheel loaders are on the Case 621 and 721 page, the backhoes on the Case 580 page. More machines are in the Case section.
