The Case 580 is the familiar name of Case’s loader/backhoe, the tractor with a front loader bucket and a digging arm at the back. Case built the first factory-integrated backhoe loader in 1957 and had made half a million by 2005.

History of the Case 580

1957: the first integrated backhoe

Case introduced the first factory-integrated backhoe loader with the 320 Construction King of 1957, a machine built as one unit in the factory rather than assembled from a tractor and an attachment. That idea, a loader in front and a digging arm behind on one small wheeled chassis, is what the 580 still is.

Half a million machines

The line grew into the company’s flagship: Case built its 500,000th backhoe loader in 2005. In 2017 the company described the loader/backhoe as the number one machine in its range, alongside excavators, wheel loaders, motor graders, rollers, crawler dozers, skid steers and compact track loaders.

The 580 today

The version in the film is a 580 Super N Longhorn Edition. The 580L and 590 are other names from the same line, and the 2017 European upgrade brought the machine to Stage IV/Tier 4 Final emissions standards. The sources do not give engine sizes for the individual models, and none are added here.

Design and features

  • One machine, two jobs: a front loader and a rear digging arm on a single chassis.
  • Long production: five hundred thousand backhoe loaders built by 2005.
  • Emissions upgrades: the 2017 European version met Stage IV/Tier 4 Final rules.
  • Many names: 580, 580L, 590 and the Super N of the film.
  • Flagship status: the loader/backhoe is the machine Case is best known for.

Case 580 versions

  • Case 580: the standard backhoe loader.
  • Case 580L: a later version of the same machine.
  • Case 590: the larger model of the line.
  • 580 Super N Longhorn Edition: the version shown in the film.
  • Case 320 Construction King (1957): the machine the line started with.

The wheel loaders are on the Case 621 and 721 page, the excavators on the Case CX page, and the tracked machines on the Case 450 page. All of them are in the Case section.
