The Ursus C-330 was the light tractor that carried most of the work on small Polish farms for two decades. Built in Warsaw from 1967 to 1987, it used a two-cylinder 30 hp diesel, a six-speed gearbox and a simple hydraulic lift. Farmers knew it as the trzydziestka, or the ciapek.

History of the Ursus C-330

The C-330 entered production in 1967 as a light farm tractor for small and medium holdings. It was a four-wheeled machine of frameless construction with drive to the rear axle only, designed for field work but also for farm transport. It could work with mounted, trailed and power-driven implements, and with a belt pulley for stationary machinery.

The engine was the S-312C, a two-cylinder four-stroke diesel of 1,960 cc with direct injection and a compression ratio of 17:1. It produced 22.3 kW, or 30.5 hp to DIN, at 2,200 rpm, with a maximum torque of about 100 Nm between 1,600 and 1,800 rpm. Fuel consumption was quoted at 265 g/kWh. A two-stage dry clutch and a six-speed gearbox with two reverse gears gave a speed range from 1.87 to 23.44 km/h.

The hydraulic system used a pump delivering 20 litres a minute at 11 MPa and a three-point linkage with a lift capacity of 700 kg, or 750 kg in the C-335 variant. The independent PTO ran at 550 rpm, and dependent PTO speeds ranged from 69.6 to 870 rpm. Steering was by a double-lever system with a bevel gear, and the brakes were mechanically operated shoe brakes, independent on each rear wheel.

The tractor was 308 cm long, 159 cm wide and 199 cm high, with a wheelbase of 1,955 or 1,905 mm and ground clearance of 400 or 480 mm. Dry weight in standard form was 1,495 kg; ready for work it ranged from 1,675 to 1,880 kg. Front tyres were 6.00-16 and rear tyres 12.4/11-28, 9.5/9-32 or 11.2/10-28, with a wide choice of track settings.

Much of the C-330’s appeal lay in the options. Buyers could order a compressor and pneumatic system for tyre inflation and trailer brakes, a driver’s cab, external hydraulics with one, two or four outlets, a belt pulley, row-crop wheels, twin rear wheels, wheel weights and lower exhaust. That flexibility, together with simple maintenance, kept the tractor in demand for twenty years.

Design and features

  • Two-cylinder S-312C: 30.5 hp, 1,960 cc, direct injection and low fuel consumption.
  • Simple six-speed gearbox: six forward and two reverse speeds, with a two-stage clutch.
  • Independent PTO: 550 rpm, with dependent speeds for driven implements.
  • Adjustable track: front track 1,350 or 1,650 mm and several rear settings.
  • Long option list: compressor, cab, extra hydraulic outlets, row-crop and twin wheels.

Ursus C-330 versions

  • Ursus C-330: the standard tractor with a 700 kg lift.
  • Ursus C-335: variant with a 750 kg lift capacity.
  • Transport and row-crop versions: different tyres, track settings and twin wheels.
  • Factory-option machines: compressor, cab, belt pulley and up to four hydraulic outlets.

The C-330 replaced the Ursus C-328 and worked alongside the larger Ursus C-360. More tractors are in the Ursus collection.
