The Ursus C-328 was the light tractor that replaced the C-325 at the Ursus works in Warsaw in 1963. Its two-cylinder S-312B engine of 28 hp, two-stage clutch and adjustable track made it a versatile machine for small farms, and production reached 75,056 before it ended in July 1968.

History of the Ursus C-328

The C-328 went into production in 1963 as the successor to the Ursus C-325. The main change was a more powerful engine, the S-312B of 1,960 cc and 20.6 kW (28 hp), together with improvements to the hydraulic system that raised its output. A compressor was added so the tractor could work with trailers fitted with air brakes, along with a rev counter and a multi-gauge.

Compared with the C-325 the cylinder bore grew from 98 to 102 mm, which raised the capacity from 1,810 to 1,960 cc and the power from 25 to 28 hp. The engine received a new block and cylinder head, pintle injectors and a decompressor lever moved to the valve cover. The lift capacity was increased, the tyres grew in size, and the tractor gained new rear wheel weights, wider-spaced headlights, indicators and a revised bonnet opening. The oil filler moved forward of the injection pump, and the valve covers changed from rectangular two-bolt covers to rounded single-bolt ones.

Export versions were adapted to local tastes. Tractors sold in Italy carried a bonnet and wings by Victorio Cantatore and were marketed there as the Field Boy P-300. The French market took tractors with the Italian bonnet only, while examples with the standard bonnet also went to France.

Production ended on 1 July 1968 after 75,056 tractors had been built. The C-328 was replaced by the C-330, which kept the basic two-cylinder layout but offered more power and a revised transmission. The C-328 is remembered as a simple, economical light tractor that suited small mixed farms, and it remains a popular machine with collectors in Poland and abroad.

Design and features

  • Two-stage clutch: allowed the PTO to keep driving implements during short stops.
  • Decompressor: eased cold starting by lowering compression pressure.
  • Adjustable track and clearance: useful for row crops and different soil conditions.
  • Economical two-cylinder engine: low fuel consumption and a good weight distribution.
  • Proven gearbox: a durable six-speed transmission, though with few ratios.

Ursus C-328 versions

  • Standard C-328: the domestic version with the Ursus bonnet.
  • Italian export: Victorio Cantatore bonnet and wings, sold as the Field Boy P-300.
  • French export: Italian bonnet only, or standard bonnet in some batches.
  • Late C-328s: some features of the C-325 and C-328 overlapped as changes were introduced gradually.

The C-328 was replaced by the Ursus C-330, and it was the smaller stablemate of the Ursus C-360. More tractors are in the Ursus collection.
