The Ursus 1614 was the heavy tractor of the Ursus range, produced at the Zaklady Mechaniczne Ursus works in Warsaw from 1984 to 2009. A six-cylinder diesel of 155 hp, a 12/6 gearbox and a lift capacity of 5,500 kg put it at the top of the Polish maker’s field range.

History of the Ursus 1614
The 1614 was the largest of the classic Ursus tractors and stayed in production for twenty-five years, from 1984 to 2009. That long run covered the last years of the state economy and the difficult transformation of the Polish tractor industry, and it explains why the model is still a common sight on Polish farms. Production reached 4,857 examples, a modest figure for a light tractor but normal for a machine of this size and price.
Under the bonnet sat the DS Martin Z8602.12, a six-cylinder diesel rated at 114 kW, or 155 hp, with 566.6 Nm of torque. Buyers could choose between a 12-speed gearbox with six reverse gears and a 16/8 version; the first gave a top speed of 31 km/h, the second 39 km/h. The independent power take-off ran at 540 or 1000 rpm, so the tractor could drive both older implements and faster modern machinery.
The hydraulics delivered 55 litres a minute through five quick couplers and the rear linkage lifted 5,500 kg, enough for heavy ploughs and transport implements. The tractor weighed 5,028 kg dry and 6,460 kg with ballast, on 14.9 R24 front and 18.4 R38 rear tyres. In practice it was bought for the heaviest fieldwork and for haulage, where its weight and torque mattered more than its top speed.
The 1614 was not a sophisticated machine by West European standards, but it was simple, robust and easy to repair with parts that were available locally. That reputation kept it in production long after newer designs had appeared, and it is the reason many examples survive today as working tractors rather than museum pieces.
Design and features
- 155 hp six-cylinder diesel: the DS Martin Z8602.12 gave the 1614 the power for heavy ploughing and haulage.
- Two gearbox options: 12/6 for standard work or 16/8 with a higher top speed of 39 km/h.
- Heavy rear linkage: 5,500 kg lift capacity and 55 l/min hydraulic output through five couplers.
- Long production life: built without a break from 1984 to 2009, with 4,857 examples made.
Ursus 1614 versions
- 12/6 version: the standard gearbox, 31 km/h top speed.
- 16/8 version: more ratios and a 39 km/h top speed for transport work.
- Ballasted specification: working weight raised from 5,028 kg to 6,460 kg with weights.
- Late-production tractors: the last examples left Warsaw in 2009, still with the same basic layout.
The 1614 shared its heavy-tractor role with the turbocharged Ursus 1634, and its four-cylinder stablemate was the Ursus 912. More Ursus tractors are in the Ursus collection.
