The Ursus 4514 was introduced in 1989 as the four-wheel-drive member of the 4512 family, the model that replaced the long-serving C-360. Its 60 hp Perkins diesel, eight-speed gearbox and Comaxle-built front axle made it the middleweight workhorse of the late Ursus range, and 5,904 examples were built before production ended in 2009.

History of the Ursus 4514

The 4512 was first shown in 1987 at the Polagra farm fair in Poznan, and assembly began in 1987–1988 to replace the popular C-360. Its design was based on the Massey Ferguson 265, using some components shared with the licensed Ursus MF-255 that had been in production since 1984. Early tractors even used the bonnet of the heavy Ursus 912.

In 1989 the range gained the 4514, a version with a driven front axle built under Comaxle licence. It was the more capable of the pair on wet ground and in heavy draft work, while the rear-wheel-drive 4512 remained the cheaper option. In 1993, at Polagra 93, the Ursus development centre and IBMER displayed two 4512 tractors converted to run on LPG and on compressed natural gas, an experiment that did not reach series production.

Power came from the Perkins A4.236, known in Polish production as the Ursus 4390, a four-cylinder diesel of 3,865 cc. It was rated at 44.1 kW (60 hp) or 48.5 kW (66 hp) at 2,000 rpm, with 232 or 255 Nm of torque. The gearbox had eight forward and two reverse speeds, top speed was 28 km/h on 13.6-38 tyres, and the independent PTO offered 540 and 1000 rpm.

The hydraulic lift was rated at 1,700 kg, with alternative capacities of 2,200 or 2,600 kg, and the external hydraulics delivered 26.2 litres a minute at up to 19 MPa through two or four couplers. The rear axle used a Gleason spiral bevel final drive, the wheelbase was 2,300 mm and the height with exhaust 2,670 mm. The standard 07 cab had a noise level of 87 dB(A) at the operator’s position.

In its last years the tractor was sold in Agro form with a metal bonnet and in Agro Bis form with a higher-standard cab and plastic bonnet and wings. The latest engine version, the Ursus 4410, reached 50.5 kW (68.7 hp). Production of both 4512 and 4514 ended at the close of 2009, after 6,550 and 5,904 tractors respectively.

Design and features

  • Four-wheel drive: a driven front axle under Comaxle licence, the main difference from the 4512.
  • Perkins four-cylinder diesel: 3,865 cc, 60 or 66 hp and up to 255 Nm.
  • Massey Ferguson 265 basis: a proven layout with parts shared with the MF-255.
  • Flexible hydraulics: 1,700 kg lift, optional 2,200 or 2,600 kg, 26.2 l/min.
  • Agro and Agro Bis: metal or plastic bodywork and two cab standards in later years.

Ursus 4514 versions

  • Ursus 4512 (1987–2009): rear-wheel-drive original, 6,550 built.
  • Ursus 4514 (1989–2009): four-wheel-drive version, 5,904 built.
  • Agro: metal bonnet, standard equipment.
  • Agro Bis: better cab, plastic bonnet and wings.
  • Gas prototypes (1993): two 4512 tractors converted to LPG and CNG for the Polagra fair.

The 4514 shared its Perkins engine family with the Ursus 3512, and it replaced the Ursus C-360 in the range. More tractors are in the Ursus collection.
