History of the Peugeot Nautilus
A 605 underneath
The Nautilus was developed from the mechanical platform of the Peugeot 605 and given the new V6 engine. Pininfarina lengthened the wheelbase by 15 cm and widened the tracks by 12 cm, so the car measured close to five metres and was much bulkier, and much less manoeuvrable, than the 605 saloon. Its weight was considerably higher than that of the Peugeot it was based on.
Inside
The cabin abandoned any visual link with the Sochaux maker. The driving position was much more sporting, with very long seat cushions, and took some getting used to. Enveloping seats and a huge, steeply raked windscreen confirmed the sporty atmosphere. The sense of space and light came from a very discreet dashboard and a glazed roof panel. In front of the driver, a partly open flap revealed two white-faced instruments, and the gear lever was made of aluminium.
