The 607 was launched in October 1999 to replace the discontinued 605. It used its predecessor’s chassis under an all-new, more modern body, and the engine range of 2.2 and 3.0 petrol and 2.2 diesel was completely new. The car was built at Sochaux until March 2009, when assembly moved to the Rennes plant as production was being wound down. In France it was often chosen for official government use.

Equipment

Equipment levels were high: every model had air conditioning, a CD player, electric windows, eight airbags, anti-lock brakes, a tyre-pressure monitor and central locking. AMVAR nine-stage electronic damping control was available as an option.

Facelift

The 607 was restyled in November 2004. The most notable changes were a new front end and the 2.7 HDi V6 engine, rated at 204 PS and paired with a new six-speed automatic gearbox that also became available on the V6 petrol model. The 2.0 and 2.2 diesels gained power and a six-speed transmission, as on the new 407. The pre-facelift petrol range was a 2.2 16-valve of 158 PS and a 3.0 V6 24-valve of 207 PS, raised to 163 and 211 PS after the facelift; diesels were a 2.0 HDi of 109 PS, a 2.2 HDi of 133 PS before the facelift and a 2.2 HDi Biturbo of 170 PS and a 2.7 HDi Biturbo of 204 PS after it. During 2008 the 607 was withdrawn from the United Kingdom, ending right-hand-drive production.

607 Paladine

The 607 Paladine is a one-off Landaulet built in 2000 with the coachbuilder Heuliez as a concept car. It uses the 3.0 V6, is 500 mm longer at 5.4 m, and has a retractable metal roof over the rear compartment like the CC cars. Its leather interior was developed with Hermès and the car was first shown at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2000. Seven years later it was used by President Nicolas Sarkozy for his inauguration on 16 May 2007, by which time it had been updated with the 2004 front end.

Successor

In November 2009 Philippe Varin of PSA announced that the successor to the 607 would not be called the 608 but the 508, which also replaced the smaller 407.
