History of the Peugeot HX1

Position in the range of concepts

The HX1 followed the Peugeot SR1, HR1 and SxC studies and was developed by Gilles Vidal, then head of Peugeot design, with the aim of moving the brand upmarket. It was a large, low luxury crossover with a monospace body and a modular 4+2 seat layout.

The hybrid system

The car introduced Peugeot’s diesel-electric HYbrid4 technology in a luxury car. A 2.2-litre HDi four-cylinder diesel of 150 kW, or 204 hp, drove the front wheels, while a 70 kW electric motor, or 95 hp, sat between the rear wheels, giving all-wheel drive and a combined output of 220 kW, or 299 hp. Average consumption in the combined cycle was 3.2 l/100 km with 83 g/km of CO2.

Plug-in battery

The lithium-ion battery could be recharged from a standard electrical socket and gave 30 km of electric-only range, against 3 km for the Peugeot 3008 HYbrid4 that used a similar system in a much smaller car.

Design and features

  • HYbrid4 diesel-electric: a 2.2 HDi up front and an electric motor at the rear.
  • 299 hp combined: 220 kW from two power sources.
  • Low consumption: 3.2 l/100 km and 83 g/km of CO2.
  • Plug-in battery: 30 km of electric range from a standard socket.
  • 4+2 seats: a modular layout in a low, luxury crossover.

Peugeot HX1 versions

  • HX1 (2011): the single concept car shown at Frankfurt.

The HX1 used the HYbrid4 idea later sold in the Peugeot 3008 and 508, and followed the SR1 concept. More in the Peugeot collection.
