History of the Peugeot Fox

A hybrid by design

The Fox arrived in 1993 and combined the strong points of mopeds and scooters. It could carry objects more easily than a classic moped and had a long range thanks to its tank of more than five litres. Its 16-inch three-spoke wheels gave it the look of a moped, with a slight resemblance to the 103 SPX, and its single-sided swingarm was an original touch.

How it rode

Despite the moped look, the Fox behaved like a scooter, with comfortable riding and more urgency at low and medium engine speeds. That came partly from its belt transmission, its twin variator and its cylinder with five transfer ports. The hybrid nature showed clearly in lubrication: some versions ran on a petrol-oil mixture, others on separate oil injection. Peugeot had tried the same idea before, with the 105 sixteen years earlier.

In use

The Fox was widely used at the time for pizza deliveries, both by large chains and by independent pizzerias. La Poste used Fox mopeds with a front carrier that made it easier to carry the mail.

FXR

The Peugeot FXR, or Peugeot Fox Racing, produced from 2005, was the sport version of the Fox, with a lens in place of the headlamp, a reinforcement bar and the complete front end of the 103 RCX.

Design and features

  • Moped-scooter hybrid: moped looks with scooter manners.
  • Twin variator: automatic transmission with a belt drive.
  • Five-transfer cylinder: more urgency at low and medium speeds.
  • Long range: a tank of more than five litres.
  • Single-sided swingarm: an unusual layout that gave the Fox its look.

Peugeot Fox versions

  • Fox (1993): the standard moped.
  • Fox with separate lubrication: versions with oil injection instead of a mixture.
  • FXR (2005): the sport version with a 103 RCX front end.
  • Fox La Poste: postal fleet machines with a front carrier.

The Fox followed the idea of the Peugeot 105 and used the front end of the 103 RCX on its sport version. More in the Peugeot collection.
