History of the Peugeot XP6

The XP series

The Peugeot XP appeared in 1986 in automatic form, succeeding the Peugeot TSA and TSM. Peugeot was aiming at the trail market, competing with the Yamaha DTMX, the MBK ZX, the Honda MTX and the Malaguti Dune. Despite a high price, up to 15,000 francs at the time, it was a success with young riders and became a common sight outside schools next to Peugeot 103 and MBK 51 mopeds. The whole XP series with automatic transmission ran from 1986 to 1996.

The XP6

In 1997, manual gearboxes being allowed again on mopeds in France, Peugeot launched the XP6, the first manual-gearbox moped from the company since the SX5 ended in 1980. There were two XP6 models, one from 1997 and a restyled one from 2005, sold as the XP6 track, XP6 trail and XP6 top road.

Technical

The XP6 used a Minarelli AM6 engine of 49.7 cc, a Showa hydraulic fork of 36 mm, a Dell’Orto carburettor of 12 or 16 mm, an 18-inch rear wheel with a 190 mm disc and a 21-inch front wheel with a 240 mm disc. The frame was galvanised steel tube with a square section between 1997 and 2005 and a round section from 2005.

The end of the XP line

From 2011 the XP7 gradually took the place of the XP6 as the range was restructured for a more competitive market. The XP7 left the Peugeot catalogue in 2014, ending the whole XP line and all Peugeot 50 cc motorcycles, as the company chose to concentrate on scooters.
