History of the Peugeot Type 172

One number, two cars

The Type 172 spanned the years 1923 to 1929, and Peugeot used the number for two different nameplates. The first covered derivatives of the Quadrilette, the tiny cyclecar that had replaced the Type 161: the Type 172 and the Type 172 BS, also called the Quadrilette Grand Sport.

The Quadrilette derivatives

The Quadrilette’s 1923 redesign produced the Type 172, launched during 1924. The track was widened so that the two seats could be placed side by side, which improved comfort and space, and although the wheelbase was shortened there was more luggage room because the car no longer had two rows of seats. The engine remained the 667 cc four, and the upgraded Type 172 BC and 172 BS versions had an enlarged 720 cc side-valve unit with slightly more power.

The 5CV derivatives

The same number also covered the Peugeot 5CV, the model that replaced the Quadrilette in 1924, through the Type 172 BC, 172 R, 172 M and 172 S. The Quadrilette and the 5CV were sold side by side in 1924, after which Quadrilette production ceased, and the Type 172 name continued on the newer car.

Design and features

  • Two nameplates: the number covers both the Quadrilette and the 5CV.
  • Side-by-side seating: the main change of the 1923 redesign.
  • Small engines: 667 cc in the Quadrilette, 720 cc in the Grand Sport.
  • Long run: the number stayed in use from 1923 to 1929.

Peugeot Type 172 versions

  • Type 172 and 172 BS: Quadrilette derivatives, the BS being the Grand Sport.
  • Type 172 BC, 172 R, 172 M and 172 S: 5CV derivatives.

The Type 172 grew out of the Quadrilette and continued on the 5CV, while the larger Type 163 covered the same years in another class. More in the Peugeot collection.
