New Holland 4055: a utility tractor of the blue era

The New Holland 4055 is a utility tractor of the period in which all New Holland machines were painted the same blue. The film below shows an example working on a small farm. The sources used for this page describe the company and its range rather than this model, so the page keeps to what they say.

History of the New Holland 4055

One brand, one colour

New Holland as a tractor brand was assembled from two older ranges. Ford bought Sperry New Holland in 1986 and formed Ford New Holland; Fiat bought 80 per cent of that business in 1991 and merged its own Fiatagri tractor division into it. For several years after 1993 the combined tractor range was sold in both Fiat terracotta red and Ford blue, so that dealers and customers of each make could keep buying what they knew. The decision to paint everything blue and sell it only as New Holland was taken in 2000 — the year from which the modern blue identity dates.

Where the 4055 sits

The 4055 is a utility tractor: the size of machine bought for mixed farms, smallholdings and yard work rather than for large arable farms. The sources used here do not give its engine, power or years of production, so this page does not either. Its number points to the smaller end of the range, below the big T7 and T8 tractors that the company now markets for heavy field work.

Today’s range

The company that built it is now part of CNH Industrial, with its administrative headquarters in Turin and New Holland, Pennsylvania, as the North American base. Its line runs from the T5 class for light work and front loaders, through T6 and T7 tractors for medium and large farms, to the T8 and T9 classes for the heaviest field work and transport, with compact and hobby tractors alongside them.

Design and features

  • Utility size: a tractor for mixed farms rather than large-scale arable work.
  • Blue era: it belongs to the years after New Holland unified its colours in 2000.
  • Two heritages: the brand it wears combines the Ford and Fiat tractor ranges.
  • Wide family: part of a range that now stretches from T5 to T9.
