New Holland TV series: the bidirectional tractors

The New Holland TV series is the company’s line of bidirectional tractors: machines in which the cab and controls can be turned to face either end of the tractor, so the driver looks straight at whichever implement is being used. The film below shows a TV 6070 with a snow blower. The sources used for this page describe the company, not the series.

History of the New Holland TV series

One cab, two directions

Most tractors have one working direction and a driver who spends half the day looking over his shoulder. Bidirectional tractors were built to change that: the whole operator station, seat and steering wheel turns through 180 degrees so that the driver faces whichever implement is mounted, front or rear. The layout suits machines that carry different equipment at each end, and the New Holland TV models belong to that idea.

What they are used for

The class found its buyers in municipal work and in farming where an implement is often mounted at the front: snow blowers, sweepers, mowers and loaders. A bidirectional tractor towing a blower can clear a road at speed with the operator watching the auger, which is why these machines turn up in winter service fleets. On farms they were bought for specialist jobs where the view forward matters more than raw power.

The tractor in the film

The film below shows a TV 6070 working with a Pronovost snow blower in Canada — exactly the work the layout was designed for. The sources used here do not give the series’ engine or transmission details, and this page does not invent them. They do record the company it comes from: New Holland, formed into a single brand in 1996, merged with Case in 1999 and now part of CNH Industrial.

Design and features

  • Reversible cab: the operator can face either end of the machine.
  • Implement at either end: front-mounted snow blowers, mowers and sweepers.
  • Municipal favourite: a common sight in winter service fleets.
  • Specialist farm tool: bought where the driver’s view matters most.

New Holland TV series versions

  • New Holland TV 6070: the model shown in the film.
  • Earlier TV models: the TV 140 and TV 145 of the same line.
  • Conventional tractors: the T6 and T7 classes for ordinary field work.

The conventional range is on the New Holland T series page, and the high-horsepower tractors on the New Holland TG page. More machines are in the New Holland section.
