Mercury was created by Edsel Ford in 1938 to bridge the gap between the Ford and Lincoln lines. The Mercury Eight was introduced at the New York Auto Show in November 1938 and sold over 65,800 vehicles in its first model year.
From 1945 it formed half of the Lincoln-Mercury Division. After a long decline in sales and market share, Ford announced the closure of the division at the end of 2010.
