History of the MAZ-5549

A tipper of the renamed family

The MAZ-5549 was built from 1977 on the base of the MAZ-5335 and continued the MAZ-503A. Like every lorry of the MAZ-5334 and MAZ-5335 family it received a new designation under the Soviet industry standard ON 025270-66, which was in force at the time.

New lights, new grille

The introduction of GOST 8769-75 brought Soviet vehicle lighting into line with the recommendations of the UN Economic Commission for Europe, now Regulation 48. The headlights were moved from the front panel of the cab to the front bumper, and a new decorative radiator grille with special plugs was fitted in the old openings; the combined side lamps and turn signals sat in those plugs.

Alongside its successor

In 1985 the Minsk plant began building the new-generation MAZ-5551 dump truck. Even so, the MAZ-5549 stayed on the line until 1990, so for five years both tippers were produced at the same time.

Design and features

  • MAZ-5335 base: the tipper of the modernised MAZ-500 family.
  • Bumper headlights: the lighting of the 1975 Soviet standard.
  • Five years beside the MAZ-5551: the older tipper outlived the arrival of its successor.

MAZ-5549 versions

  • MAZ-5549 (1977–1990): the standard tipper of the family.

The MAZ-5549 followed the MAZ-503A, was based on the MAZ-5335 and was built beside its successor the MAZ-5551. More are in the MAZ collection.
