History of the MAZ-5335

A renamed family

In 1977 modernised lorries of the MAZ-500 family began to leave the Minsk line: the MAZ-5335 and MAZ-516B lorries, the MAZ-5549 tipper and the MAZ-5429 and MAZ-5430 tractor units. The modernised machines received the new designations under the Soviet vehicle numbering system that came into force at the time.

Headlights into the bumper

The visible change came from GOST 8769-75, which brought Soviet vehicle lighting into line with the recommendations of the UN Economic Commission for Europe, now Regulation 48. The headlights moved from the front panel to the front bumper, and the old openings were filled with a new decorative radiator grille with plugs carrying combined side lamps and turn signals.

The family

The base MAZ-5335 carried the YaMZ-236 of 180 hp. The MAZ-5334 was its chassis, meant to take special bodies and equipment. The MAZ-53352 was a long-wheelbase lorry, a development of the MAZ-500G with a 5,000 mm wheelbase, a payload of 8,400 kg, the 265 hp YaMZ-238E eight-cylinder engine and a new eight-speed gearbox. The MAZ-516B was a three-axle lorry with a lifting third axle and the 300 hp YaMZ-238N. The MAZ-5549 tipper developed the MAZ-503A, the MAZ-5429 tractor unit developed the MAZ-504A and the MAZ-509A logging lorry developed the MAZ-509. A version for extreme cold, the MAZ-533501, worked down to −60 °C with double glazing and extra insulation on cables and hoses.

The end of the family

The lorries of the MAZ-5335 family stayed on the line until 1990. In 1987 and 1990 the MAZ-5337 and MAZ-5336, built with the MAZ-5335 at the same time, took over the role of the basic lorry.
