History of the MAZ-5440
Designed before the Soviet Union ended

As with the previous generation of MAZ road lorries, the fourth generation, whose development began in the late 1980s, was planned around two main tractor units: a 6×4 lorry for trains of up to 44 tonnes, the MAZ-6430, and a 4×2 lorry for trains of up to 32 tonnes, the MAZ-5440. The first prototype of the second model was built in 1993 as the MAZ-54462 and went through extensive testing in 1994. In 1996, after acceptance and service trials in the fleets of Belarus, the new MAZ-5440 range was recommended for series production.
The first serial tractors
On 11 March 1997 the first long-haul tractor units of the new family, the MAZ-54421, were built. At the end of 1997 the MAZ-54402 and MAZ-544021 joined them, meeting European requirements for long-distance haulage.
Restyling and the Euro-6 car
In 2008 a restyled model, the MAZ-5440A9, went into production with a modernised cab: the front panel with the radiator grille and the bumper with new block headlights were changed, and series production started in 2009. For the 70th anniversary of the Minsk Automobile Plant in 2014 a restyled MAZ-5440M9 of Euro-6 standard was presented, with a new cab developed at the plant to European standards and with the engine and chassis parts of the Mercedes-Benz Actros.
Engines
Over the years the tractor has been offered with a long list of engines: YaMZ units of Euro-2 standard of 250, 330 and 400 hp, YaMZ Euro-3 units of 250, 330, 400 and 412 hp, Mercedes-Benz Euro-4 and Euro-5 engines of 435 hp, YaMZ Euro-4 units of 240, 312 and 420 hp, YaMZ Euro-5 of 422 hp, and the Euro-6 Mercedes-Benz OM 471 of 475 hp in the MAZ-5440M9. Some early versions used the MAN D2866 LF15 of 370 hp.
